Cremation Bench in Igualada
Igualada (Barcelona), Spain
Although it could be considered a purely technical object, much like the building upon which it rests, we have endeavored to imbue it with all the poetics required by the location. In this way, the main idea behind the design was to delicately understand the context it presents. Thus, through the use of material a sculptural character is imparted, creating the impression that a bench extends and rests over three independent seats, balanced on only one element at its end that keeps it steadfast. The use of black causes certain structural elements to blend with the background, accentuating the quality of balance and its subtle descent onto the supporting elements.
By also playing with the positioning of the backrests and the extension of the bench, two instances are generated-one for been supported and another for enjoying solitude. This approach establishes a dialogue between visitors and the distant landscape, fostering a conversation between life and death.
