El Pinar Masterplan
Alcalá de Xivert (Castellón), Spain
We were asked to build a large number of residences on a mountain slope facing the sea and isolated from any urban core, yet clearly visible from the town of Alcalá de Xivert.
Our main concern was to minimize the impact on the landscape and at the same time to come up with a scheme that would foster a sense of community among the inhabitants of the new development.
With the objective of fragmenting the volume and, therefore, reduce its impact on the landscape, we organized the program in clusters of single-family units instead of small apartment blocks.
The sharp inclination of the terrain made it difficult to create a single public space that would unify the complex, so we decided to group the homes around small plazas laid on two levels, traversed by a road at an intermediate height that gives access to the parking.
The determination to foster a sense of community prompted the decision to provide parking facilities at road level for all residents to share, even though they live separately, in one-family homes.
