Lumine Hotel
Salou (Tarragona), Spain
The project rises on a plot right on the beach, with a well-preserved natural environment protected from the impact of mass tourism. We wanted to transform the site into a dream place which, far from diminishing the location’s qualities, would add appeal to it through the services it offered as a hotel, giving the landscape a cultural dimension.
We were concerned about how the building would be seen from the coast. We did not want it to look like a bold, aggressive mass, but as a fragmented volume full of vibrations and adapted to the different levels of the topography, interspersed with the pine grove. These vibrations are provided by the casual closing and opening of the room shutters, painted in warm colors similar to those found in the surroundings.
We designed four blocks of rooms that can function independently. Their sinuous form makes adapting to the topography easier and introduces a play of shadows, while allowing a longer facade, with the resulting smaller impact of its frontal view.
Two different room patterns make for optimal orientation. The rooms facing the sea are deeper and narrower, and outnumber those looking toward the mountain.
The maximized height authorized at ground level and on three floors results in a high occupation of the territory, leaving little ground for outdoor activities. This, in combination with a complex topography, led us to design a large terrace over the lobby, open to sea views over tree tops. The terrace contains part of the leisure program, a large swimming pool, a solarium, and a café. It is also in this raised place, the hotel’s most privileged spot, that the restaurant is. We landscaped it in a way that vegetation blends with the environs, eliminating one’s sense of being on top of the concrete platform of the lobby.
