Sports Center
Punta Umbría (Huelva), Spain
On the outskirts of Punta Umbría, where the construction of tall buildings follows no rules and the vegetation of pine trees is still very present, the brief asked for the construction of a new sports center – suitable for other uses –, a football field, and an open air fronton tennis court.
We thought this new building would be the most emblematic and representative of Punta Umbría. We didn’t want to follow any of the lines that were in the place. We wanted to make the volume stand out as much as possible, letting it become the expression of the complexity of all the events the building could hold.
To achieve this we took the structure out to the exterior: two large arches reduce the span of the girders that hold the roof; one arch balances the other, and the roof of the football field stands balances the roof of the sports center. Meanwhile, we try to ensure the interior remains simple and continuous. Inside, the spectacle is the game.
The stands become larger or smaller to make the program possible.
They grow to shelter the area of access, or else to house the press booths. They decrease in size to allow the overlap with the football stadium seating or to become an extension of the terrace, which works as an observation platform offering views of the fronton tennis court. The services program is freely placed below the stands, ensuring the communication areas have sunlight and views of the exterior.
