For her significant contribution to gender equality, Carme Pinós is honored with the 2016 Berkeley-Rupp Award.
UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design (CED) has awarded Spanish architect Carme Pinós the 2016 Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Prize and Chair. This biennial award recognizes a design professional or scholar who has made significant contributions to gender equality in the field of architecture and has demonstrated outstanding commitment to sustainability and community. The award includes a semester-long professorship, a public lecture, and an exhibition at CED.
“It is with great pleasure that we award the Berkeley-Rupp Prize to Carme Pinós. Her exceptional design, vibrant intellectualism, dedication to public architecture and landscape in the public realm, and support for women-led economic development embody all that we strive to cultivate with this award”, remarked CED Dean Jennifer Wolch
Carme Pinós is the third recipient of the Berkeley-Rupp Prize, following Deborah Berke (2012) and Sheila Kennedy (2014). Her research plan will focus on an agricultural research and learning center in Burkina Faso. The research aims to explore ways to implement design and research led by architect Albert Faus and supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism of Burkina Faso. The project seeks to develop a low-cost thermal insulator using the groundnut, which is widely cultivated in the area and is mostly handled by women.
