Du Jard Park
Saint-Dizier, France
Saint-Dizier was in the midst of a process of revamping its old quarter while undertaking an urban reflection on its wider territory. With an important industrial past and a rich military history, the town is located in an exceptional geographic context.
The strategy behind the proposal lies in revaluing Saint-Dizier’s heritage and affirming and consolidating its identity.
After a process of research and the discovery of a long forgotten past of activities on the banks of Marne River, we designed an urban beltway that borders the canal and connects it to the river through the city. This strong gesture organizes the neighborhoods, structuring them and connecting them to one another and to the historic quarter.
The new scheme, a result of superposing the landscaping project and the program requirements, uses water as guiding thread and progressively unveils the still existing marks of the old fortifications. As an identifying element of the new Saint-Dizier the urban beltway offers symbols, essential references in city representation.
