Formentor Hotel Extension
Puerto de Pollensa (Mallorca), Spain
The commission consisted in the extension of a hotel located on Formentor bay, an extraordinary landscape in the island of Mallorca.
The old hotel was built with povera materials and was transformed, after several extensions, into a large oblong spot in contrast with the green landscape, a practically virgin territory. In spite of this huge impact, Formentor Hotel has become a cherished and totally familiar image in the island.
Local regulations (all buildings must be inscribed within a certain radius) forced us to complete the desired number of rooms by building another three hotels.
The project avoids competing with the old hotel, choosing to meld into the landscape and to ensure that only the existing building will contrast in color and form with the territory. The colors of our buildings will be the materials of the place: stone and wood.
While the old hotel is totally frontal, ours, thanks to the good orientation, traces a fanned out shape and in this way part of the building is always concealed behind the rest.
We unravel following the topography, letting the large compact and frontal mass be only that of the old Formentor Hotel.
