Sandaru Civic Center
Barcelona, Spain
The project, a two-story building, develops from an interior courtyard that, located in the upper level as an extension of the workshops, favors the maximum relationship of the interior spaces with the exterior while preserving the privacy of its users, given the urban features of the site.
This space permits working outdoors without city noise and at the same time favors the interaction among members. We want to avoid an entirely interior courtyard and, to this end, it opens up to a terrace with views of the street through the corridor that connects the two workshop areas.
The ground level is set back to create an area that protects the users from the flow of people on the street, and at the same time functions as a terrace during the warmer months.
In the intermediate level we place the program that doesn’t need this link with the exterior, like the gym and the auditorium.
The fact that the more repetitive openings, like those of the workshops and offices, open up towards the interior of the courtyard allows us to compose towards the city a freer, more unique facade, emphasizing its character as public building.
We have wanted to blend with the context while offering the city a distinctive building.
