Social Housing in Vallecas
Madrid, Spain
Our intention was to create, in a context that offered very little scope for action, a strong volumetric statement. The composition of the building is not too dependent on the details of the facade, and its formal expression is marked rather by the volume’s play of shadows.
The volumetric approach achieves not only the desired formal effect, but also allows to fit the number of housing units required in the brief exclusively in three vertical circulation cores.
Addressing our responsibility of making city, of thinking not only about the people living in the dwellings but also in those passing by, we created large porticoes that cross the whole building.
In this way the plants and trees in the center of the block are visible from the street and it is possible to reduce the number of housing units at street level, which always pose challenging privacy issues.
