Urban Intervention in Praza do Mar
Sanxenxo (Pontevedra), Spain
The proposal takes into account the privileged location of the intervention area in relation to the municipality of Sanxenxo and is developed with the intention of enhancing the current landscape.
Our focus is on providing a new urban space for the city—a space for everyone, open and versatile, to be enjoyed at any time and season of the year.
We believe that the solution should not involve creating a new building in competition with existing ones but rather establishing a harmonious ensemble that dignifies them, minimizing the generation of debris and unnecessary expenses.
It is essential, in our view, to limit the scale of the immense platform over the current parking.
A large Y-shaped roof generates three areas of different uses, articulated by a café facing the privileged views of the sunset.
We allocate the area closest to the city to children’s play. To achieve this, we landscape the existing slope to give it a more welcoming character. We place planters beneath the slab to allow for the planting of trees that will provide shade to the play area.
Routing vehicular circulation leading to the pier through the interior of the parking area creates a large car-free promenade, an extension of the existing one, parallel to the beach.
This promenade connects the city with Praza do Barcos and Praza do Mar, extending the pedestrian promenade initiated at the beach to the end of the pier.
The third area will be a clear space without obstacles, shielded from the view from the city by the large roof, and can be used in multiple ways. In extreme cases, it could even function as occasional parking.
