Vallromanes Masterplan
Alcalá de Xivert (Castellón), Spain
The proposal tried to address the conflict of so many towns located close to large urban centers that, in very little time suffered major changes, with rural areas becoming second-home neighborhoods. These areas have been converted, over the past years, into satellite towns of the nearby cities because of the overcrowding of these and the rising prices of housing.
The problem was how to address this demand for a large number of first residences without losing the rural character of the single-family houses. Since these were constructed outside the center, they remained oblivious to town issues and hadn’t managed to build a community spirit.
Here we propose to bring the new development close to the center, grouping the residences along the streets that connect the areas of single-family houses with a new promenade parallel to the riera, a sort of new town boulevard.
Our intervention in Vallromanes was halfway between the sprawling garden-city and the compact urban center.
